A Gentle Wake-Up Call for Your Heart: Finding Your Way Back to Allah
Episode 1
Part of our series inspired by Manazil al-Sa’irin (The Stations of the Seekers).
Have you ever reached the end of a busy day and wondered where your time went? You prayed, worked, took care of your responsibilities, and did many things, but did you take a moment to think about your relationship with Allah?
Sometimes, we become so caught up in daily life that we forget to care for our hearts. We may overlook our blessings, delay good deeds, or forget the purpose of our lives.
This is called heedlessness, and recognizing it is the first step toward change.
In Manazil al-Sa’irin, a book by Imam Abdullah al-Harawi about the spiritual journey toward Allah, the first station is Yaqazah, which means awakening.
Let’s find how we can awaken our hearts and find our way back to Allah.
1. When We Forget What Truly Matters
Heedlessness does not always mean that we have stopped worshipping Allah. Sometimes, we continue our daily acts of worship while our hearts become distracted.
We may pray without concentration, waste hours on things that bring little benefit, or forget to thank Allah for the blessings we enjoy every day.
Allah says:
“And do not be like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves.”
(Quran 59:19)
The first step is to pause and ask ourselves: Am I giving enough attention to my relationship with Allah?
This question is not meant to make us feel hopeless. It is an invitation to reflect, make changes, and begin again.
2. Three Ways to Awaken Your Heart
Remember Allah’s Blessings
Think about the blessings you enjoy every day: the gift of faith, your health, your family, and the time you have to do good.
Allah says:
“And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them.”
(Quran 14:34)
Many blessings become so familiar that we stop noticing them. When we reflect on them, our hearts fill with gratitude, and we begin to understand how much we depend on Allah.
Ask yourself: Am I using the blessings Allah has given me in ways that please Him?
Be Honest About Your Shortcomings
Awakening also means recognizing our mistakes.
Perhaps we waste too much time, delay good deeds, struggle to concentrate during prayer, or miss opportunities to help others.
Recognizing our shortcomings does not mean losing hope. It means taking responsibility, seeking Allah’s forgiveness, and trying to do better.
A sincere heart sees both sides: Allah’s countless blessings and its own need for His mercy.
Reflect on Your Progress
Take a moment to look at your life.
Are you becoming more patient? Are you reading the Quran more regularly? Are your prayers receiving the attention they deserve? Are you treating others with kindness?
Growth does not always mean doing more. Sometimes, it means doing the same good deeds with greater sincerity and consistency.
What matters is that we keep trying to move closer to Allah.
3. How Can You Keep Your Heart Awake?
Three simple habits can help you grow spiritually:
• Seek beneficial knowledge. Learn about Islam from trustworthy sources and put what you learn into practice.
• Do not delay good deeds unnecessarily. When you have an opportunity to pray, read the Quran, help someone, or give charity, take it.
• Keep good company. Spend time with people who remind you of Allah and encourage you to become a better person.
Also, make time to reflect on your day. Even a few quiet minutes can help you recognize your mistakes, appreciate your blessings, and renew your intentions.
A Simple Seven-Day Challenge
Reading about spiritual growth is a good beginning, but real change comes through action.
Try these small steps over the next seven days:
• Day 1: Write down five blessings Allah has given you.
• Day 2: Identify one habit that wastes your time or weakens your worship.
• Day 3: Read the Quran for ten minutes and reflect on its meaning.
• Day 4: Do one good deed you have been postponing.
• Day 5: Ask Allah sincerely for forgiveness for your shortcomings.
• Day 6: Spend time with someone who encourages you to do good.
• Day 7: Reflect on what you have learned and choose one good habit to continue.
You do not need to change everything overnight. Begin with small, sincere steps and ask Allah to help you remain consistent.
Finding your way back to Allah begins with awakening your heart.
Do not wait for a special occasion or the perfect moment to change. Start today, even with one small good deed.
May Allah awaken our hearts, forgive our shortcomings, fill our lives with gratitude, and guide us toward what pleases Him. Ameen.
