Compete for the Hereafter, Not the World
Have you ever felt sad because someone has more money, a better job, or a more successful life than you? Have you ever compared your life with someone else’s and felt that you were falling behind?
Islam teaches us to look at success differently.
A Beautiful Saying by Al-Hasan Al-Basri
The great Muslim scholar Al-Hasan Al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
“Whoever competes with you in matters of faith, then compete with them. But whoever competes with you in worldly matters, leave them to it.”
This beautiful saying reminds us that not every race is worth running. It encourages us to compete in what truly matters: faith, good deeds, kindness, and our relationship with Allah.
Allah says in the Quran:
“And in that let the competitors compete.”
(Quran 83:26, Sahih International)
What Does This Mean for Our Lives?
When someone has more money, a bigger house, or a more successful career, we do not need to feel jealous or less valuable. These things are part of worldly life, and they do not determine our worth in the sight of Allah.
Instead of comparing our blessings with those of others, we can focus on becoming better Muslims.
When someone reads the Quran regularly, let it inspire us to read more. When someone helps people, let us become more generous. When someone is patient, forgiving, or kind, let us learn from their example.
Let other people’s goodness inspire you, not make you feel inferior.
This does not mean that we should stop working hard or pursuing our goals. Islam encourages us to work, learn, and use our abilities well. The important thing is to keep this world in our hands, not let it control our hearts.
Choose the Race That Truly Matters
Dear reader, life is not a competition to see who owns more, earns more, or receives more attention.
One day, the things we worked so hard to collect will remain behind, but our deeds will matter.
So, when you see someone moving ahead in worldly life, wish them well. And when you see someone moving closer to Allah, let their example encourage you to do the same.
Do not exhaust your heart trying to be better than everyone in this world. Instead, spend your life becoming closer to Allah.
May Allah purify our hearts from envy, fill them with contentment, and help us compete in goodness.
Ameen.
