A Lesson in Forgiveness from Abu Bakr (RA)
Have you ever been hurt by someone you trusted?
Sometimes, the hardest thing is not to forgive a stranger, but to forgive someone close to you.
There is a beautiful lesson in the life of Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (RA) that shows us the true meaning of forgiveness.
When Abu Bakr (RA) Was Hurt
During the famous incident of the Slander (Al-Ifk), false accusations were spread against Aisha (RA), the beloved wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Allah later revealed verses declaring her innocence. (Quran.com)
Among those involved in spreading the accusation was Mistah ibn Uthathah, a relative of Abu Bakr (RA). Abu Bakr had been supporting Mistah financially because of their family relationship.
After hearing what Mistah had said about Aisha, Abu Bakr was deeply hurt and decided that he would no longer support him.
But then Allah revealed:
“Let them pardon and overlook. Would you not love that Allah should forgive you?”
Qur’an 24:22 (Quran.com)
These words touched Abu Bakr’s heart.
He said that he certainly loved for Allah to forgive him, and he went back to supporting Mistah as he had done before. Sahih al-Bukhari records this event. (Quran.com)

What Can We Learn?
Forgiveness does not mean that the hurt was not real.
Abu Bakr (RA) was genuinely hurt, yet he chose to forgive because he hoped for Allah’s forgiveness.
This teaches us that sometimes we forgive not because the other person deserves it, but because we ourselves hope to be forgiven by Allah.
When someone hurts you, remember this powerful question from the Qur’an:
“Would you not love that Allah should forgive you?”
Perhaps forgiving someone today can be a reason for Allah to forgive you tomorrow.
