Night Prayer and the Light of Faith: How Tahajjud Beautifies the Heart and Face
Have you ever noticed that some people have a special peace and light on their faces? Their beauty is not only in their appearance. There is something deeper—a calmness, humility, and goodness that can be felt when you are around them.
One of the beautiful acts of worship that can bring this inner light is night prayer (Tahajjud).
The Beauty That Comes From Prayer
Allah describes the believers who bow and prostrate to Him:
“You see them bowing and prostrating [in prayer], seeking bounty from Allah and [His] pleasure. Their mark is on their faces from the trace of prostration.”
— Qur’an 48:29, Sahih International (Quranic Arabic Corpus)
This verse beautifully connects worship with a visible mark of faith. The scholars explained this “mark” in different ways. Some understood it as the light and beauty of obedience, while others explained it as humility, good character, and the peaceful appearance of a person who sincerely worships Allah. (Quran KSU)
So, the beauty of worship is not necessarily a physical mark on the forehead. It can be the beautiful effect of faith that appears through a person’s face, manners, humility, and character.

Why Is Night Prayer So Special?
Night prayer has a special place in Islam because it is a private act of worship between the servant and Allah. While most people are sleeping, the believer gets up to pray, recite Qur’an, make du‘a, and seek Allah’s forgiveness.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The best prayer after the prescribed prayer is the prayer in the middle of the night.”
Sahih Muslim (Alim)
There is something deeply beautiful about standing before Allah when no one is watching. It teaches sincerity and strengthens the heart.
Does Night Prayer Make the Face More Beautiful?
Some early scholars mentioned that frequent night prayer can beautify the face during the day. Ibn Kathir, while explaining the verse in Surah Al-Fath, mentioned the statement of some of the early generations:
“Whoever prays much at night, his face becomes beautiful during the day.” (Quran KSU)
Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله also spoke about the beautiful effect of night prayer on the believer, describing it as something that can bring light and beauty to the face.
But the real beauty of Tahajjud goes beyond appearance. A person who regularly stands before Allah may develop more humility, patience, sincerity, peace, and good character.
That is the beauty that truly matters.
Start With a Small Step
You do not have to begin with a long night prayer.
Start with just two rak‘ahs before Fajr, even if only a few times a week. Read what you know from the Qur’an, make sincere du‘a, and speak to Allah from your heart.
Over time, these quiet moments may become among the most peaceful moments of your day.
The night prayer is not only about staying awake at night. It is about waking up the heart.
And perhaps the greatest “light” it brings is not the light that people notice on your face, but the light that Allah places in your heart.
