The Benefits of Remembering Allah: Why Dhikr Is So Important in Islam
In the middle of a busy day, the heart can easily become distracted. Work, family responsibilities, worries, and endless thoughts can take up most of our attention. Yet Islam gives us a simple and beautiful way to reconnect with Allah at any time: dhikr, the remembrance of Allah.
Dhikr is more than simply repeating certain words. It is an act of worship that keeps the heart connected to its Creator. Whether you say SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah, or simply remember Allah in your heart, every moment of sincere remembrance is valuable.
So, what are the benefits of remembering Allah, and why does Islam place such great importance on dhikr?
What Does Dhikr Mean?
The Arabic word dhikr (ذِكر) means remembrance. In Islam, it refers to remembering Allah through words, supplication, recitation of the Quran, praise, and keeping Allah in one’s heart.
Dhikr can be done almost anywhere and at any time. You can remember Allah while walking, driving, cooking, waiting for an appointment, or before going to sleep.
Allah says:
“O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance.”
— Quran 33:41, Sahih International
This verse reminds us that dhikr is not something reserved for a particular place or occasion. It can become part of our everyday lives.
1. Dhikr Brings Peace to the Heart
One of the greatest benefits of remembering Allah is the peace it brings to the heart.
Life will always contain difficulties. We may experience fear, sadness, uncertainty, or stress. Dhikr does not mean that problems suddenly disappear, but it helps the believer remember that Allah is always near and that we are never truly alone.
Allah says:
“Unquestionably, in the remembrance of Allah hearts find rest.”
Quran 13:28, Sahih International
This is one of the most comforting verses about dhikr. The heart needs more than worldly distractions to find lasting peace. It needs its connection with Allah.
2. Dhikr Strengthens Our Relationship with Allah
Every relationship grows through communication and attention. Our relationship with Allah also becomes stronger when we regularly remember Him.
When a person frequently says Alhamdulillah, they become more aware of Allah’s blessings. When they say Astaghfirullah, they remember their need for His forgiveness. When they say La ilaha illallah, they renew their belief in Allah’s oneness.
Dhikr therefore helps us remain spiritually connected throughout the day rather than remembering Allah only during difficult moments.
3. Allah Promises to Remember Those Who Remember Him
Imagine the honor of being remembered by your Lord.
Allah says:
“So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.”
Quran 2:152, Sahih International
This verse shows the special relationship between the servant and his Lord. When we remember Allah sincerely, Allah promises to remember us.
For a believer, this is one of the most beautiful reasons to make dhikr part of our daily life.
4. Dhikr Is an Easy Act of Worship
Some acts of worship require a specific time, place, or physical effort. Dhikr is different. It is remarkably accessible.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that the tongue should remain moist with the remembrance of Allah.
He said:
“Keep your tongue moist with the remembrance of Allah.”
Jami` at-Tirmidhi
You do not need special equipment or a particular place to make dhikr. You can begin with a few words and gradually make remembrance a natural part of your routine.
5. Dhikr Helps Us Develop Gratitude
A believer can easily focus on what is missing and forget what Allah has already given.
Dhikr helps change this perspective.
When we repeatedly say Alhamdulillah, we train ourselves to notice Allah’s blessings. Our health, family, food, safety, knowledge, faith, and even the small moments of ease in our day are blessings from Him.
Gratitude does not mean ignoring life’s difficulties.
It means recognizing that even during difficult times, Allah continues to give us reasons to be grateful.
6. Dhikr Can Protect the Heart from Neglect
The heart can become spiritually weak when it is constantly occupied with worldly matters.
Just as the body needs nourishment, the heart needs spiritual nourishment. Dhikr helps keep the heart awake and connected to Allah.
The Prophet ﷺ gave a powerful example when he said:
“The example of the one who remembers his Lord and the one who does not remember Him is like that of a living person and a dead person.”
Sahih al-Bukhari
This hadith shows how important remembrance is for the spiritual life of a believer.
7. Dhikr Is Among the Best Deeds
Dhikr may seem simple, but its reward is immense.
The Prophet ﷺ was asked which deeds were the best, and he encouraged the remembrance of Allah.
In another authentic hadith, the Prophet ﷺ said:
“The Mufarridun have gone ahead.”
When the Companions asked who they were, he explained that they were:
“Those men and women who remember Allah much.”
Sahih Muslim
This shows that frequent dhikr is not a small or insignificant act. It is a deed that can raise a believer’s rank with Allah.
Simple Dhikr You Can Practice Every Day
You do not have to start with a long list of adhkar. Begin with a few simple phrases and focus on understanding what you are saying.
SubhanAllah
Glory be to Allah.
Alhamdulillah
All praise is due to Allah.
Allahu Akbar
Allah is the Greatest.
La ilaha illallah
There is no deity except Allah.
Astaghfirullah
I seek forgiveness from Allah.
You can also make dhikr after the obligatory prayers, in the morning and evening, before sleeping, and during quiet moments throughout your day.
How Can We Make Dhikr a Daily Habit?
The key is consistency rather than trying to do everything at once.
You could start by choosing a few simple moments:
• Make dhikr after each obligatory prayer.
• Say Alhamdulillah whenever you notice a blessing.
• Say Astaghfirullah when you remember a mistake.
• Make dhikr while walking or doing simple household tasks.
• Remember Allah before going to sleep.
• Learn the authentic morning and evening adhkar gradually.
Most importantly, try to understand the words you are saying. Dhikr is not simply a movement of the tongue. Its real beauty is when the tongue remembers Allah and the heart is aware of Him
A Small Habit That Can Change Your Day
Sometimes we think that becoming closer to Allah requires making dramatic changes in our lives. But spiritual growth can begin with something very small.
Take a few minutes today. Put your phone aside. Sit quietly and say:
SubhanAllah.
Alhamdulillah.
Allahu Akbar.
La ilaha illallah.
Astaghfirullah.
Say them slowly and think about their meanings.
You may discover that those few quiet moments bring something your busy day could not give you: a renewed awareness of Allah.
A busy life should not mean a heart that is far from Allah. Even in the middle of our daily responsibilities, we can keep our tongues and hearts connected to Him.
Remember Allah often, even with a few simple words. A small act of sincere dhikr may become one of the most meaningful parts of your day.
