The Beautiful Reward of Visiting the Sick in Islam
Have you ever visited someone who was ill and noticed how happy they were to see you? Sometimes, a simple visit, a kind word, or a sincere du’a can bring comfort to someone going through a difficult time.
In Islam, visiting the sick is more than a kind gesture. It is an act of worship, a way to show love for others, and an opportunity to earn great rewards from Allah.
The Prophet ﷺ Encouraged Us to Visit the Sick
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to care for people who are in need. He said:
“Feed the hungry, visit the sick, and set free the captives.”
Source: Sahih al-Bukhari, 5649.
Notice how the Prophet ﷺ mentioned visiting the sick alongside other important acts of kindness. This shows us that caring for others is an important part of our faith.
When we visit someone who is ill, we remind them that they are not alone. We give them a chance to talk, share their feelings, and feel loved and remembered.
Allah Rewards Those Who Care for Others
One of the most moving hadiths about visiting the sick is found in Sahih Muslim.
The Prophet ﷺ reported that Allah will say on the Day of Resurrection:
“O son of Adam, I was sick but you did not visit Me.”
The person will ask how they could visit Allah, the Lord of the worlds. Allah will explain that one of His servants was sick, and if they had visited that person, they would have found Allah’s reward with Him.
Source: Sahih Muslim, 2569.
This hadith teaches us something beautiful: caring for a sick person is a way to seek closeness to Allah. When we show kindness to His creation, we have an opportunity to earn His pleasure and reward.
A visit that seems small to us may be very valuable in the sight of Allah.
The Prophet ﷺ Taught Us to Care About Others
Allah describes the compassion of His Messenger ﷺ in the Qur’an:
“There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves. Grievous to him is what you suffer; [he is] concerned over you and to the believers is kind and merciful.”
Qur’an 9:128 — Sahih International.
The Prophet ﷺ cared deeply about people’s suffering. As Muslims, we should try to follow his example by showing kindness, compassion, and concern for those who are struggling.
Visiting the sick is one simple way to put these values into practice.
How Can We Make Our Visit Meaningful?
You do not need to do anything special to bring happiness to someone who is ill. A few simple actions can make a real difference:
- Visit with a sincere intention: Go to please Allah and bring comfort to the sick person.
- Speak gently: Choose kind words and offer hope without making promises about recovery.
- Keep your visit comfortable: A short visit may be best if the person is tired or needs rest.
- Make du’a for them: Ask Allah to grant them healing, patience, and peace.
- Offer practical help: Ask if they need food, medicine collected, or help with everyday tasks.
- Respect their needs: If they cannot receive visitors, a phone call or message can still show that you care.
Remember, the purpose is not simply to visit, but to make the sick person feel cared for.
A Small Act of Kindness, A Great Opportunity for Reward
Life can become busy, and we may keep telling ourselves that we will visit a sick relative, friend, or neighbour another day. But we never know how much a visit might mean to someone who is struggling.
You do not have to wait for a special occasion. If someone you know is ill, take a few minutes to check on them. Call them, send a kind message, or visit when it is suitable.
May Allah grant healing to every sick person, reward those who care for them, and make us people who bring comfort and kindness to others. Ameen.
