Secrets of Prayer (6) – Simple Lessons About Focus, Gratitude, and Trust in Allah
Introduction
Prayer in Islam is not only words we recite. It is a special moment when a servant speaks directly to Allah. This is a time of closeness, love, and private conversation. Because of this, the heart should stay focused on Allah and not turn away during prayer.
Respect When Speaking to Allah
Imagine a king calls someone to speak with him. If that person turns his back or looks away, the king would be angry. So how should a servant behave when speaking to Allah, the King of all kings?
This example teaches us that prayer needs respect, attention, and presence of heart.
The Secret of Surah Al-Fatiha
We should pause at every verse of Surah Al-Fatiha while praying. Why? Because Allah answers every verse. In a sacred hadith, Allah says:
“I have divided the prayer between Me and My servant into two halves.”
This means prayer is a conversation.
When we slow down and think about each verse,
we feel that we are truly speaking to Allah.
Meaning of “Al-hamdu lillahi Rabbil ‘alamin”
“Al-hamdu lillahi Rabbil ‘alamin”
This verse means:
• All perfection belongs to Allah.
• Allah is perfect in His names, actions, and attributes.
• Allah is free from every imperfection.
A beautiful meaning is that “Al-hamd” (praise) will be the final word of all creation:
• The people of Paradise will say it.
• The angels will say it.
• Even the people of Hell will say it, admitting Allah’s perfect justice after judgment.
Seeing Allah’s Wisdom in Everything
Everything that happens to us—good or bad in our view—is from Allah’s wisdom and justice. Sometimes hardships happen because of our own actions. A famous example is the Battle of Uhud, when a small group disobeyed one command, which led to a great loss. This shows that some problems come from ourselves.
There is also a deep lesson: sometimes Allah tests obedient people because of others’ mistakes. Some believers who obeyed still died in that battle. Their death was an honor for them, because dying for Allah is a blessing for the one who dies—but a test for those who remain alive.
When What You Lose Is Actually Mercy
Sometimes Allah stops something we really want, such as:
• money
• business success
• children
• opportunities
We may feel sad, but Allah knows what we do not know. That thing might have caused arrogance, sin, or distance from Him. So what looks like loss may actually be protection and mercy.
The Special Praised Station
On the Day of Judgment, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ will receive a special honored مقام (station). He will prostrate under the Throne of Allah, and Allah will inspire him with praises that no one was given before. This shows the greatness of that day and the honor given to the Prophet ﷺ.
A Beautiful Final Lesson
One of the most touching lessons is this:
When Allah inspires you to say “Al-hamdu lillah,” that itself is a blessing that deserves another “Al-hamdu lillah.”
So gratitude never ends. Every praise is a new gift from Allah.
Conclusion
Prayer becomes beautiful when we understand it. When we focus, reflect on Al-Fatiha, trust Allah’s wisdom, and stay grateful, salah changes from a routine into a peaceful meeting with our Lord.
Always remember:
The more your heart is present in prayer, the closer you are to Allah.
